Description
:
Bridge was to be built across backwater. Six spans of 20mts each box girders. Average water depth was about 7mts. In most of the pier locations, there was no soil on the bed and there was direct outcrop. Foundation: as per the original proposal all the piers and abutments were to be built on 1500mm dia pile. Subsequently because ofdirect outcrop, high flowing urrents, and sloped river bed, pier foundations were changed from pile to well. Abutments were done using pile foundation. Wells could not be done by island formation method because of the outcrop, and hence sacrificial steel caissons were adopted, excepting one pier location. Salient features: this is the first bridge in southern railway to be done using caissons.
